What happens when you invite international educators to learn a language together? We’ve seen the power of this idea in the UK—and now we’re bringing it to Australia and New Zealand!
Duolingo has launched the Duolingo Language Challenge in Australia and New Zealand, a 10-week learning competition that brings together professionals from across the international education sector. From July 28 to October 6, participants will track their language learning progress on the Duolingo app, cheer each other on, and compete for a spot on the leaderboard.
We’re running this challenge to celebrate the educators who support international students every day—and to highlight how joyful, accessible, and community-driven language learning can be.
Powered by the Duolingo English Test
This regional challenge is hosted by the Duolingo English Test, our innovative, secure, and affordable English proficiency exam. Like the DET, the Language Challenge reflects our mission: to develop the best learning tools in the world and make them universally available.
How it works
Participants earn XP (experience points) by practicing any language on Duolingo—including English—and receive weekly updates with leaderboards, language facts, and encouragement. The challenge includes:
- Personal goals and team spirit
- Weekly spotlight features
- Certificates and charity prizes
At the end of 10 weeks, we’ll celebrate top scorers and institutions with $8,000 in charity contributions made in their name.
Save the dates
- July 28 – Challenge begins
- August 31 – Registration closes
- October 6 – Leaderboard locks and winners announced
- October 15 – Winners honored at the Australian International Education Conference (AIEC) reception in Canberra
Who can join?
The challenge is open to employees of institutions that are registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) in Australia, and to those working at institutions listed on New Zealand’s NZQA list of quality-assured providers.
No matter which language you're learning, you’ll be part of a community that values curiosity, consistency, and connection.
Help us show that international education speaks many languages!
