What is English about?

Set in Karaj, Iran, in 2008, English by Sanaz Toossi is a heartfelt comedy that explores the complexities of language, identity, and the ambitions of English learners. The story unfolds in a classroom where four adult students—Elham, Roya, Omid, and Goli—prepare for an English proficiency exam under the guidance of their teacher, Marjan.

Each character brings a unique perspective. Elham dreams of studying in Australia; Roya hopes to connect with her granddaughter in Canada; Omid considers his future opportunities; and Goli discovers self-expression through a new language.

The play masterfully captures the emotional intensity of language acquisition while exploring the personal stakes behind proficiency testing. Knud Adams directs this Pulitzer Prize-winning play about the universal foibles of language and miscommunication.
