Canada is celebrated for its high-quality education, diverse culture, and welcoming environment, making it a top destination for international students. Canada's education system is known for its flexibility, offering specialized programs and a strong focus on student support. And many of Canada’s top institutions accept the Duolingo English Test, so it's easier than ever to apply!

No more government-designated test requirement

In November 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) ended the Student Direct Stream (SDS) and Nigerian Student Express (NSE) programs. Under those programs, students from certain countries like India were required to take only government-designated English tests to qualify for a study permit; that barrier has now been removed.

IRCC does not require students to take an English test to apply for Canadian study permit. Instead, applicants must meet the English language proficiency requirements of the institution and program they’re applying to.

This change puts the choice in the hands of applicants, making the DET a smart option for demonstrating language proficiency.
